ChatGPT Plus vs the API: which is cheaper for you?

Twenty dollars a month buys a lot of API calls. Here is the break-even in real chat answers.

For light to moderate use, the API is almost always cheaper than ChatGPT Plus. At $20 per month, Plus costs the same as roughly 3,000 GPT-6.1 Sol chat answers or tens of thousands of GPT-6 Luna answers on the API. Plus wins when your use is heavy on a frontier model, or when you want the Codex apps. The API wins when volume is low, when a cheap model is enough, or when you are building a product.

Two separate bills

Plus and the API are different products with different billing. The Plus plan page says API usage is separate and billed separately, and that usage can be extended with ChatGPT credits. Paying for Plus does not give you API tokens, and API spend does not unlock Plus features.

The ChatGPT plans that matter most here:

PlanMonthly priceWhat the official page lists
ChatGPT Free$0Codex with GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app, subject to rollout
ChatGPT Go$8Same Codex access as Free
ChatGPT Plus$20Codex on the web, CLI, IDE extension and iOS; usage extendable with credits
ChatGPT Pro 100$100Pro models, Codex, deep research, image creation, memory, file uploads
ChatGPT Pro 500$500Highest included usage of the Pro plans; Ultrafast mode for GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra
ChatGPT Business (Standard seat)$25At least two paid seats; SAML SSO and MFA; no training on business data by default

My data does not list message caps for Plus, so I cannot say how many questions it covers. Compare its price with the per-task API costs below. See all plans on the plans page.

What one answer costs on the API

I measured per-task costs for a chat question and a customer email reply. Each used one run per task, default settings, via OpenRouter, with output capped at 16,000 tokens. Reasoning tokens are billed as output.

Two OpenAI models bracket the range:

  • GPT-6 Luna: 0.06¢ per chat answer ($0.59 per 1,000). Under 0.01¢ per email reply ($0.07 per 1,000). Both measured.
  • GPT-6.1 Sol: 0.67¢ per chat answer ($6.72 per 1,000). 0.18¢ per email reply ($1.78 per 1,000). Both measured.

The median across all 326 models is 0.24¢ for a chat answer, so Luna sits well below it and Sol above it. Sol's chat answer used 45 input, 560 output and 103 reasoning tokens. Luna's used 45 input, 540 output and 639 reasoning tokens. Luna reasons more, but its per-token price is far lower: $0.10 input and $0.50 output per 1M tokens, against $2.00 and $10.00 for Sol.

Details are on the chatbot answer page and the email reply page. To test your own volumes, use the calculator.

When Plus wins

A flat plan wins when your use is heavy and the included models and features fit your work.

  • Heavy daily chat on a frontier model. At $6.72 per 1,000 Sol chat answers, $20 buys about 2,970 answers. Ask more than that each month and Plus is cheaper at these rates. Longer answers or attachments move the break-even.
  • Coding in the Codex apps. Plus includes Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension and on iOS for a fixed fee. The alternative is paying per token, and long coding sessions add up.
  • Image creation and deep research. My data lists image creation, deep research, memory and file uploads for Pro 100 ($100 per month), not for Plus. If you need them regularly, compare that price with a separate image tool or API.
  • One tool with no setup. You get a ready interface and a fixed bill, with nothing to build or maintain.

When the API wins

  • Light or occasional use. At Luna's $0.59 per 1,000 chat answers, a few hundred questions a month cost well under a dollar. A $20 subscription pays for capacity you do not use.
  • Cheap models for routine tasks. Luna costs under 0.01¢ per email reply, and GPT-5.4 Nano costs 0.02¢. A flat plan charges the same whether or not the task needs a frontier model.
  • Products and automations. Plus is a personal subscription and does not include API access. If you ship a feature to customers, you need the API. Agents are priced by tokens per step. My agent scenario uses an 8,000-token system prompt, 50 steps, +1,500 tokens of context per step and 300 visible output tokens per step. See the 50-step agent page for current costs.
  • Choosing the model. The API lets you switch freely between models and vendors, including cheaper ones such as Claude Haiku 5.5 at $0.10 input and $0.50 output per 1M tokens.

How to decide

  • Count your monthly answers. Multiply by the per-answer cost of the model you would call, then compare with $20.
  • Check the features. Codex surfaces, image creation and file uploads can tip the balance even when raw token cost favors the API.
  • Look at who the work is for. Customer-facing or automated work needs the API.
  • Use both. Many people keep Plus for interactive work and call the API from scripts or products.

The methodology page explains how I measure tokens, reasoning and tokenizer ratios.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT Plus include API access?

No. The Plus plan states that API usage is separate and billed separately. Plus does not include API tokens.

Which is cheaper for a single chat question, Plus or the API?

Plus is a flat monthly price with no per-question cost. On the API, GPT-6 Luna costs 0.06¢ per chat answer in my measurements and GPT-6.1 Sol costs 0.67¢. Which is cheaper depends on how many questions you ask each month.

Is Pro 100 worth it over Plus?

Pro 100 costs $100 per month and lists Pro models, deep research, image creation, memory and file uploads, which my data does not list for Plus. It is worth it if you use those features regularly. If you mainly chat and code, Plus at $20 per month may be enough.
