ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month is the right plan for a solo user, because ChatGPT Business needs at least two paid seats. A team should pick Business only when it needs SAML SSO, MFA or a default of no training on business data. My price data does not publish message caps for either plan, so I can't say how many tasks a subscription covers before limits apply.
What each plan costs per month
ChatGPT Plus is $20 per month. It includes Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension and on iOS. Usage can be extended with ChatGPT credits. API usage is separate and billed separately.
ChatGPT Business has two seat types:
- Standard seat: $25 per month
- Premium seat: $125 per month
Both require at least two paid seats per workspace. The Standard seat also includes SAML SSO and MFA, no training on business data by default, and usage that can be extended with ChatGPT credits.
| Plan | Monthly price | Minimum seats | Listed security features |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus | $20 | 1 | None listed |
| ChatGPT Business (Standard) | $25 | 2 | SAML SSO, MFA, no training on business data by default |
| ChatGPT Business (Premium) | $125 | 2 | None listed beyond the seat minimum |
The per-seat gap between Plus and Standard is small. The two-seat minimum is what changes the bill.
What a solo user gets
Business is not available to one person. Plus is the only plan in this comparison that a single user can buy, and it covers Codex in the places most individual developers work.
The usage limits are not in my data, so the practical test is to run your real workload for a week and see whether you hit a cap. If you do, credits can extend Plus usage, which is a cheaper step than jumping to a higher tier. The plans page lists the other subscriptions if you want to compare.
Estimating API-equivalent tasks
A subscription and the API are billed separately, so a Plus fee does not lower your API costs. What I can offer is the per-task API cost of a chat answer, which shows what the same work costs if you pay by token. The median across all 336 models is 0.24¢ per task.
| Model | Input / output per 1M tokens | Cost per task | Cost per 1,000 tasks |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Luna | $0.10 / $0.50 | 0.06¢ | $0.59 |
| GPT-5.4 Mini | $0.75 / $4.50 | 0.53¢ | $5.34 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | $2.00 / $10.00 | 0.67¢ | $6.72 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2.00 / $10.00 | 1.3¢ | $12.68 |
| GPT-6 Astra | $10.00 / $50.00 | 3.4¢ | $33.60 |
GPT-6 Luna, GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5.5 are measured. GPT-5.4 Mini and GPT-6 Astra are estimated. The spread between cheapest and most expensive is wide, and that matters more for an API budget than for a flat subscription.
Because the allowance behind the $20 fee is not published, I won't convert it into a number of chat answers. If you plan to use the API next to Plus, enter your own volume and model in the calculator. The chatbot answer task page and the GPT-6.1 Sol page show the details, and the methodology explains how I measured.
What a small team gets
For two or more people, the Standard seat at $25 per month is the cheaper Business option. Each extra person adds another seat at the same rate.
Business makes sense when the team needs:
- SAML SSO and MFA for account access
- No training on business data by default
- A shared workspace instead of personal subscriptions
If none of these matter, two Plus subscriptions cost less than a two-seat Business workspace and have no seat minimum. The trade-off is simple: Business buys controls, Plus buys a lower price.
The Premium seat is $125 per month. My data does not say what extra usage it gives over Standard, so judge it by your own usage numbers.
When the extra seat cost is justified
Pay for Business when the security and admin features matter to your company. Single sign-on, MFA and a no-training default are the reasons. Price alone is not a reason, since two Standard seats cost more than two Plus subscriptions.
- Solo user: Plus.
- Team that needs SSO, MFA or the training default: Business Standard.
- Team that only wants cheaper access: Plus seats, after checking real usage.
FAQ
Can I use ChatGPT Business alone?
No. A Business workspace requires at least two paid seats. A single person should look at ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month.
Does a Plus subscription cover my API usage?
No. API usage is separate and billed separately from Plus. You pay per token at the model's list price.
How do I know if my team needs Business or Plus?
Check whether you need SAML SSO, MFA or a no-training default on business data. If you do, choose Business. If not, Plus seats avoid the two-seat minimum and cost less.
